• Welcome!

  During the four weeks of February in 2013, we started our first MOOC – The Science of how Communication Technology Shapes our Social Lives. We use the word started because we are leaving the material available online for individuals to use. Each week had its own topic, activities, and facilitator. In week one Dr. Nick Bowman introduces the principles of human-computer-human communication. In week two Dr. Dave Westerman investigates on-line relationships. In week three Dr. Alan Goodboy and Dr. Matt Martin address cyberbullying and other destructive workplace behaviors. In week four Dr. Elizabeth Cohen covers the topic of handling technology overload.

  For those of you that participated with us in February 2013, we appreciate your participation and hope you found some of the information thought-provoking. If you are stopping by this webpage for the first time, we invite you to explore the four weeks of material. Choose any week that sparks your interest. Watch the presentations that you find inviting; when you desire, follow the links for more information. While we are not monitoring the forums as often as we originally did, feel free to post your thoughts or comments (we still visit the discussions occasionally). Also feel free to contact us directly if you have a question. You do not have to register to access the material – you only need to register to post a comment.

  This MOOC was a lot of work, but it was also a lot of fun. This whole process (e.g., identifying relevant material, creating presentations, participating in discussions) allowed us to share some of our professional and personal interests with WVU alumni, the citizens of West Virginia, and people from all over the world.

  To paraphrase the great philosopher Bluto, “Check out our MOOC – don’t cost nothing.”
